Week 6 of the NFL season kicks off with the Washington Commanders and Chicago Bears facing off on Thursday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15p.m. eastern time, the game airs on Amazon Prime.

Commanders (1-4)

Washington opened the season with a Win over Jacksonville but has since dropped 4 straight games. Carson Wentz has shown flashes of his former MVP self but has once again been plagued by turnovers. He’s thrown 6 interceptions and has been fortunate to lose just 1 of his 6 fumbles.

The good news for Washington is that standout rookie Brian Robinson Jr returned last week, he had just 9 carries and was named the starter for this week. He will aid a Commanders rushing attack that ranks 28th at 89 rushing yards per game. He had earned the starting job in training camp before being shot twice in an attempted robbery.

This offense doesn’t lack talent, their WR room is headlined by Terry McLaurin, who’s coming off back-to-back seasons of 1K yards receiving. A finally healthy Curtis Samuel that’s been lined up all over the field as Wentz’s favorite target. And even rookie Jahan Dotson has reeled in 4 touchdown passes.

Their defense has underperformed, allowing 25.6 points per game, 25th in the NFL. Some of that has to do with the offense putting them in tough spots. They also have just 1 takeaway on the year, that ranks dead last in the NFL. Despite Chase Young being on the IR, they still rank 7th in the NFL with 14 sacks and 5th on 3rd down, allowing teams to convert just 30.5% of the time.

Bears (2-3)

The Bears offense is quite pitiful to watch. Justin Fields is averaging just 17.6 pass attempts per game and they’re hell bent on running the football. They have 160 rushing attempts, nearly twice as many as passing. They rank 27th in points per game, dead last in yards per game and passing yards per game, but they do rank 5th in rushing yards per game. David Montgomery and Khalil Herbert have formed a committee at RB.

Not much to say about the receiving room, Darnell Mooney leads the team with 10 receptions. Frustrating after a Sophomore season that saw him catch 81 passes for 1,055 yards and 4 touchdowns. This offense looks like one you would see in the 1970’s, the Bears will have to open it up and trust fields more as a passer if they wish to find success.

The defense has been solid all things considered. They’ve allowed 21.2 points per game, which ranks 15th. Their offense is no help, ranking 31st in time of possession, this defense has played a lot. They’ve failed to generate consistent pressure on the QB, they have just 8 sacks. They’ve been terrible against the run too, allowing 170 rushing yards per game with an average of 4.9 yards per carry. They do have 8 takeaways however, tied for 8th in the NFL.

The Pick

Take the Commanders -1. They’re better than their 1-4 record suggests, and they match-up well against these Bears. Their biggest issues offensively have been running the football and sacks allowed. Tonight, they get the 31st ranked rush defense and a pass rush that ranks 25th with just 8 sacks through 5 games. They’ve had no issue throwing the football, averaging the 6th most passing yards per game at 278. Defensively the Commanders haven’t been bad against the run, they’ve allowed 110 rushing yards per game, despite trailing the majority of it’s last 4 games. They will be able to slow this Bears run game down and Chicago simply can’t throw, they rank dead last at 135.8 passing yards per game. And despite averaging just 17.6 pass attempts per game, Fields has been sacked 18 times this year, tied 4th most in the NFL. Which bodes well for a Washington pass rush that ranks 7th in the NFL with 14 sacks and a defense that’s allowed teams to convert on just 30.5% of 3rd downs. Washington is also 5-1 ATS the last 6 meetings vs Chicago and 5-0 ATS the last 5 times they’ve played in Chicago. The Bears have covered just 5 of their last 17 games and 2 of their last 8 home games.
