Both starting pitchers aren’t very good. Velasquez has a career 4.97 ERA as a starter and hasn’t looked too sharp in 2023 either. He finished spring with a 5.79 ERA and he has 5.4 ERA so far this year. He was awful in his first two starts before turning in a solid performance against STL. PIT just made a couple great defensive plays because STL hit the ball hard. STL went 1 for 6 on hard hit balls vs Velasquez. In his first 2 starts (7.1IP) he gave up 11 hits, walked 5, and surrendered 8 ER. His GO/AO ratio is at .3. Bad news at Coors field where the ball carries like no other. There’s also 25mph winds blowing out to right field today to carry the ball even further.

COL SP Jose Urena has a career 6.44 ERA in 12 starts at Coors Field. He failed to get through 3 innings in his first two 2 starts and gave up 3 ER in 5 IP against STL in his last start. The Cardinals had opportunities, but they’ve struggled to score runs this year, ranking 23rd in the league. Both Velasquez and Urena benefited from that in their last starts. The Pirates are swinging hot bats, scoring 14 last night, and 10 in the 2 games prior. The bottom half of these bullpens are terrible if these guys get pulled early too.
