There isn’t much practice time leading up to the first week of pre-season. The teams with more holdovers from a season ago tend to perform better. Seattle brought their offensive and defensive coordinator back from last year. Drew Lock is also entering year two with SEA and likely playing half the game. He’s compiled nearly 5K yards and 30 touchdowns in 24 NFL Games. He’s more than capable of moving the ball against #2’s and 3’s.
On the flip side the Vikings brought in a new defensive coordinator. HC Kevin O’Connell is still calling plays but the 2 QB’s running his offense tonight just joined the team this off-season. Nick Mullens opens the first half before giving way to rookie Jaren Hall out of BYU. Mullens is a solid back-up QB but he’s not playing in the QB friendly SF offense anymore. Hall took over at BYU once Zach Wilson got drafted into the NFL. He’s undersized for the pro game, 6”0 and 205. It’s a tough leap coming from an independent school with a weak schedule. Zack Wilson struggled to adjust to the NFL speed. O’Connell should keep it pretty simple for Hall’s first live game action.
Seattle will also roll out a rookie for the 2nd half. ECU’s Holton Ahers. He leads ECU in nearly every All-Time passing record. He’s thrown for 13,938 yards, ran for 1,446, and was responsible for 122 touchdowns in his college career. While he’s not from a Power 5, he did play in the respectable American Conference. He’s a big off-schedule playmaker at 6’4 230. He’ll be able to make things happen against fringe roster players.
Minnesota should just be more basic than SEA tonight. Their defense can only be so dynamic this early on with a new Defensive coordinator. Their #1’s who take the majority of reps in practice aren’t playing. Jaren Hall is a near lock to make the MIN roster as the #3 QB. No need to throw their developmental QB to the wolves when he comes in. His counterpart Ahers is in the opposite position. Unless he shows more capable than Drew Lock the Seahawks are unlikely to carry 3 QBs. Lock should also have better control of the Seattle offense then Mullens does of Minnesota’s.
