Both SP's are making back to back starts against one another. Steele allowed 8 baserunners and 2ER across 6.1 IP against STL in his last start. Start prior he allowed 6ER on 6IP. All in all he has a 5.4 ERA in July, by far his worst month to date. Deeper look into the numbers and he's allowing a BA against of .316 this month with a WHIP of 1.47. Well up from his year to date #'s of .240 and 1.11. Steele's faced the Cards 5 times in his career and has a 3.86 ERA. This will be his 4th start against STL this season and first ever start at Busch Stadium. Cards offense is humming too, scoring 5 or more runs in 10 of their 13 games since the All-Star Break.
The Cubs blasted Mikolas with 11 Hits and 5 ER on 5IP in his last start. Start prior to that he allowed 3 ER on 6IP vs MIA. He's faced the Cubs one other time this season, allowing 1 ER on 4.1IP. Cubs were on him, just couldn't break through. He threw 96 pitches during those 4.1 Innings of work. Like STL, the Cubs offense is scoring runs. They're averaging over 7 runs per game over the last week and are the #1 offense since the All-Star Break. Since the Break they're averaging 7.2 Runs per game hitting .301 with an .873 OPS.
Neither bullpen is very good either. The Cards rank 23rd with a 4.55 ERA while the Cubs rank 17th with a 4.07. Cubs Pen was just forced to pitch 5.2 Innings yesterday after Stroman got lit up too. The weather is a major factor here as well. Looking at Temps above 100° F throughout this game. The ball will carry quite a bit further than normal and that heat will wear a pitcher down quicker than usual.
